What is it that drives you crazy to be a DJ?

Is it a daily job? Is it money earnings? Is it meeting and impressing new people?

Or maybe is it more than that? Is it your passion, your inspiration or your therapy?

I hope you have the music in you as that's the most important thing.

Being a better DJ

Today there are LOTS of DJs around and it seems like everyone sees DJing as an easy skill to learn. It is true, the new technology has made it that the equipment are so easy to learn but there's more than that.

I know that out there, a lot of you are feeling down because of the lack of DJ gears that you may have, but that doesn't mean that you can't achieve what the others that have the money to buy the best equipment did. It may be easy for them to control those high-tech mixers but in my opinion just because you have a kitchen full of pots and pans, it doesn't mean that you can cook. You have to be patient, hard-working and really passionate to be the Master Chef. Same thing applies to DJing. Just because you don't have those High-Tech Controllers, it doesn't mean that you can't be the best at it. As long as you work for it and you are determined you WILL reach your goals.

If you’re feeling under-appreciated, perhaps you might reconsider the types of environments you’re playing, your target audience, and your approach. here are ways that you can provide value as a DJ outside of the way you handle transitions… and the DJ who realizes this is worth his weight in gold.

It’s the difference between competence and distinction. I don’t care if we’re talking about an illegal rave, a small art show, a wedding, a music festival or an Internet radio station.

Plenty of people can do it. You should be thinking about how you can do it better. If this is truly a passion of yours, you owe it to your craft to do what you can to do it with heart.

So how can we feel fulfilled? How can you stand out amongst a crowd of competent (but mediocre) DJs?

Play the right tracks at the right time

You need to cooperate with your surroundings. Try to choose the where and when to play and you will find out that it makes a really big difference!

Many DJs try to force their gigs in clubs that don't match their genre. Always know where you are playing. If you go on a club known for Hip-Hop try to match with it.

The lesson: know what you’re getting in to, and act accordingly.

Be versatile

Although you need to match your environment (as we mentioned above), you also need to be versatile. Now I don't mean that you have to carry every type of gig and limit your skills in a specific genre just to water it down for the crowd. You always need to play with what you're good at, but at the same time, you shouldn't be cornered in just a few gigs if you want to be appreciated.

Simply explained, it isn't a good idea to play dubstep in a coffee shop, or hip-hop in a elderly party, even if that's all you know. You need to be VERSATILE.

Open to yourself

What is it that you play with passion in front of a crowd?

Is it the experience? Is it the money? Is it the happy faces that enjoy your music? Do you enjoy to control the dance floor?

Whatever it is, be honest with yourself. Lying to yourself about why you enjoy it, is the worst way to continue.

But if you're open to yourself and you are passionate about it, you will be completely fulfilled and in every performance you will do better to achieve whatever it was that you enjoyed the most.

Some simple practical tips to improve your performance

  • Try different genres

  • Record your playing (make mix tapes)

  • Expand your style (be versatile)

  • Watch other DJs play and learn from them

  • Practice (A LOT)
